Do I need to buy special insurance for my ATV?
March 25, 2022 by Ryan Danielson
A common misconception that we often see with
recreational vehicles is that customers think their home
insurance provides coverage. In certain rare situations,
a homeowners insurance policy could provide some
coverage for rec vehicles. To ensure that you have the
proper coverage, you need to have your rec vehicles
(toys), specifically listed on your home policy or written
on a separate rec vehicle policy.
Here is a list toys that need to be insured separately:
•
ATV or UTV (Side by Side)
•
Watercraft: Boat, Jet ski, Etc.
•
Snow Mobile
•
Dirt Bike
•
Farm Tractor
•
Golf Cart
•
Basically anything with a motor
When you buy a separate policy for your toys, you can get liability insurance. This will provide
coverage if you injure someone or damage someone’s property. You’ll have the opportunity to add
medical payments which will provide medical coverage if you’re injured on your rec vehicle.
Also, you can purchase comprehensive and collision coverage. This will provide coverage for fire,
theft, weather losses, collision, etc.
Your home and auto insurance policies do NOT automatically cover your ATV’s, UTV’s,
Snowmobiles, Boats, Motorcycles, and other toys. You can spend more on a UTV than a car, so you
want to make sure you are covered!
There are specific policies and coverage for those must have toys, so please contact our office at
